Our Father
who art in Heaven
Stay there
and we'll stay here on earth
in WEYMOUTH
which is so pretty
in the early morning
walking past NOAH'S ARK
and THE PALM HOUSE
by RADIPOLE LAKE
with its swans, coots, mallards and seagulls
gathering themselves
for a later commotion
as i pass.
&
with its small avenue of trees here
surely the left-bank of The Seine
is rivalled?
why seek for anywhere else?
Manhattan's or Hong-Kong's skyscrapers
not as high as i feel right now
even with no
rye sourdough at THE PHOENIX BAKERY as yet
"See ya later, man"
says Aidan Chapman
as his all-night stint
draws to a close
&
it's saturday morning
&
the usual shop-traders
have yet to make an appearance.
But i head for THE SWAN
by the TOWN BRIDGE
where late-night revellers
are having fried breakfasts & cappucino
& i wait an age
to be served
double tomato juice & tabasco
while the coffee machine
gathers enough heat & steam
&
the bar staff take their time.
But i feel at home here
here in WEYMOUTH
with its ESPLANADE & PAVILION
its beach and PUNCH & JUDY
its HARBOUR & countless pubs
all in the lee
of THE RIDGEWAY hills
that shield us
from too much snow
if any
in winter.
&
the old roadside graffiti sign
just a couple of miles out
surely said it so well
of this special place
that i will not willingly leave -
"WELCOME TO THE NORTH"
...
Our Father
which art in Heaven
Stay there
and i'll stay here
in WEYMOUTH
which is so pretty...
