Flowering winter jasmine in a courtyard in Abbotsbury ---Just a few small yellow flowers remind me of my parent's garden in Thornhill many years ago --- What has become of them in the falling rain on a warm winter's night like this, as i awake and immediately think of them? and am warmed by the falling rain on a night like this...on a night like this...

  1. a lovely lyrical recollection. I have not seen winter jasmine, perhaps we don't have it here but do know the scent of summer jasmine flowers.

saw beautiful witch hazel branches the other week in Stanley Park in Vancouver.

  2. Jasmine : i know it very well, Carole. I recently told young check-out girl at supermarket (Yasmine) that it meant "beautiful" in arabic. It was one of my mother's favourite flowers. But i cannot remember if she carried Jasmine or Stephanottis on her wedding day - she loved them both. Or was it mimosa ? at her wedding...
...And i can't wait for cat-kins and pussy-willow !!! Spring and all...and "Asphodel, that greeny flower."

  3. What has become of them? you ask... Dad's life-work, his wonderful back garden, was destroyed by the people who bought the Shelley Road property. Hadnt they concreted the entire area? Or merely pulled out all the plants & shrubs? I recall Dad was mortified... What has become of them? Theyre in your memory, here! Theyre in your little prose reminiscence. And that's how it is! Thanks for the memory!

  4. Memory/thought of both the parents and jasmine - an intended ambivalence.
